Kyocera Fineceramics manufactures high-tech ceramic products for applications with complex and demanding requirements profiles. An interesting and constantly growing area is sensor technology, where the use of ceramic sensor components is increasingly required due to the surrounding environment and application parameters. As an example, can be mentioned:
Microwave and radar sensors for non-contact measurement: Areas of application for KYOCERA Fineceramic's ceramic products in sensor systems for e.g., material analysis or as windows and antennas in level measuring equipment are constantly rising. Because of its optical properties and the stable dielectric constant, the microwaves can be better focused with KYOCERAS alumina materials AL23 and AL23hf compared to other materials such as glass or plastic. As a result, much smaller components can also be realized.
Capacitive level measuring instruments and systems: Ceramic sensor parts and sensor rings in materials F99.7 (Al2O3) and FZM (ZrO2), partially metallized and soldered, for capacitive measurement of ambient media, have been developed for very interesting and successful applications. These so-called multiphase instruments are used in pressure ranges up to <1000 bar in the offshore and underwater industry and thus enable measurement of the content of various substances in liquid and gaseous media.
Ceramic flow meters / liners: Sintered platinum electrodes for magnetic inductive flow meters (MID), have been developed through a close collaboration between KYOCERA Fineceramics and the instrument manufacturer. These products are characterized by accurate measurement results and high reliability e.g., in plants for filling and dosing chemical liquids, food and pharmaceuticals and in the oil and gas industry.
Pressure sensors: Measuring cells in Kyocera Fineceramic's alumina material F99.7 for various pressure sensors are currently used in temperature ranges from -50 to + 150 ° C and at pressures up to several 100 bar (depending on design). The membranes can be manufactured with a thickness of 0.2 mm and with a diameter of up to 80 mm. Glass solder or active solder is used to connect the round ceramic membrane and the ceramic support body. The material for the electrode is customer-specific and is selected according to the customers' wishes. The measuring cells are used with great success in the chemical industry, in the food and pharmaceutical industry, petrochemicals and in space technology.
Oxygen measuring probes: Due to its special structure, zirconia FZY is an excellent material for measuring the oxygen content of gases, melts and for controlling combustion, carbonation and glass melting processes. These sensors also have an important function for measuring the oxygen content of food production and packaging processes of food.
The ceramic materials used in sensor applications are characterized by:
• Low hysteresis on the food signal with tolerances in ranges of 0.05%, resulting in high reproducibility of the measurement result
• High pressure and temperature resistance
• Very good dimensional stability
• High resistance to corrosive, abrasive and erosive attacks
• KYOCERA ceramic materials are FDA - Food & Drug Administration and USP Class VI qualified
• With ceramic sensor components, smaller sensors can be built
Through constant further development of materials and products in close collaboration with its customers, KYOCERA Fineceramic achieves optimal and reliable product solutions.
The products are manufactured by KYOCERA Fineceramics Solutions GmbH, Mannheim and KYOCERA Fineceramics, Japan, which has over 60 years of experience in the production and development of high-performance technical ceramics.
